Support
Thank you for your continued support
The target budget for 2008 is a figure of £17,200 which will maintain the status quo and repeat our endeavours of 2007, as at 28th February we have raised almost £3,000 of our £17,200 target for 2008 - but we would like to do more. There is plenty of opportunity and we have direct links with people in Sierra Leone who will make a difference. In this way money goes direct to where it is needed without any overheads or administrative costs.
In 2007, we spent approximately £17,200 which is broken down as follows:
- Schools - teachers salaries £5,300
- Schools - buildings and equipment - £4,000
- Church / Sports Ministry - £6,200
- Womens' Project - £900
- Travel costs - £800
At present we find we have to use all our income in each calendar year and we would like, but cannot yet afford the luxury of a reserve. That means there is reliance on our regular supporters (both individulas and UK schools).
In 2006, we spent approximately £16,000 which is broken down as follows:
- Schools - teachers salaries £4,000
- Schools - buildings and equipment - £2,500
- Church Ministry - £4,750
- Bungalow Church re-furbishment - £1,550
- Sports Ministry - £1,500
- Travel costs - £1,750
In October 2005, we completed fundraising of just over £9,000 for a 4 wheel drive vehicle that will significantly improve communication between Freetown and Koidu. This was in addition to appproximately £12,000 raised for ongoing schools and ministry work.
Supporters - Individuals
Most of our financial donors are individuals and we greatly respect their generosity and confidentiality. However giving is not just about money - in 2006 we had 3 visitors who paid their own flights to visit Sierra Leona and whilst there helped with a variety of activities from teaching chemistry to training young cricketers.
Supporters - Schools
In recent years we had support from 5 schools - Chandling School, Dragon School, Abingdon Prep, St Helen and St Katharine and Abingdon School - we particularly hope these links between school children in the UK and Sierra Leone will be continued and extended.
In the spring of 2006, Paddy Stern from Abingdon school spent 3 months of his gap year coaching cricket in Freetown. In November 2007 Abingdon school with St Helen and St Katharine raised nearly £3k via a talent show.
You may support us in many ways:
- by subscibing to our mail list - use the 'newsletter' form on the left of this page
- by making others aware of this work
- by remembering us in your prayers
- by providing resources for the long term work (books and bibles are always needed, the salary of a pastor or teacher is between £20 - £60 per month, depending on seniority).
- by providing financial support - please use this form. Making cheques payable to "St Andrews (Sierra Leone)". The administration is carried out free via St Andrews Church, Oxford.
- There will be a need in 2008 for a new classroom for Maima school which will cost approximately £2,600 to build.
- There are longer term opportunities to set up 3 or 4 more schools in Koidu which would be affiliated to the local churches. The building cost for each school is modest by UK standards. Just £10,000 will provide a building housing 2 - 3 classes and up to 100 children. Running costs (which are mainly teachers / staff salaries) for 3 classes are about £300 per month.
